Event overview
Lucy Ellmann reading from her prize-winning novel, Ducks, Newburyport, and in conversation.
The Goldsmiths Writers' Centre in association with the New Statesman presents Lucy Ellmann, winner of The Goldsmiths Prize 2019.
Lucy Ellmann will be reading from her winning novel, Ducks, Newburyport, and be in conversation with Erica Wagner, Lecturer in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths.
Latticing one cherry pie after another, an Ohio housewife tries to bridge the gaps between reality and the torrent of meaningless information that is the United States of America. She worries about her children, her dead parents, African elephants, the bedroom rituals of 鈥榟appy couples鈥, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and how to hatch an abandoned wood pigeon egg. Is there some trick to surviving survivalists? School shootings? Medical debts? Franks 鈥檔鈥 beans? A scorching indictment of America鈥檚 barbarity, past and present, and a lament for the way we are sleepwalking into environmental disaster, Ducks, Newburyport is a heresy, a wonder鈥攁nd a revolution in the novel.
Born in Illinois, Lucy Ellmann moved to England as a teenager. Her first novel, Sweet Desserts, won the Guardian Fiction Prize. She lives in Edinburgh.
